SMART READING

These are 10 books that I recommend you to read to become smarter, cooller and wiser.

Reading is not just sliding your eyes over some letters. Reading is living.

When you read, you absorb the ideas of others, ideas that have the power to change your perception of reality, empower you, liberate you, and also, in the worst case, weaken you. That is why you have to be very careful with what you read. You can read to lose or to win. You win when reading stimulates you to be better and have a better life.

Reading, living, and acquiring knowledge are one and the same thing. That is why I present you with a selection of books that will help you become wiser, stronger, have a broader perspective of the world, and break the chains of your comfort zone. I hope you enjoy it and can soar high by connecting your soul with other great minds of the past and present.

The Problems of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell is an excellent introduction for anyone new to the subject. Russell presents intricate philosophical issues, debated since the time of the Greeks, in a clear and engaging manner. When I first read it, I was captivated and finished it in just one afternoon. This book not only offers insightful solutions but also encourages deep reflection. I’m confident you’ll enjoy it and find yourself contemplating profound questions, enriching your perspective on life. Click here to get his book.

I read Freud’s “The Interpretation of Dreams” when I was a teenager, and I must confess that it opened my eyes to a new world of interpreting reality. This book is not only a classic written by a genius, but it also deals with such a mysterious aspect of our lives that it becomes unfathomable. We spend half our lives dreaming and we don’t know well what happens in our minds at that moment and why we do it. In this text, Freud, beyond finding the truth of the matter, offers a doorway to imagination, which, like all good philosophy and science, seeks to take us beyond the conventional. It’s time to stop talking about psychoanalysis and read this foundational book of human psychology from the original source. Furthermore, Freud writes in a simple and almost entertaining way. Existentialism was not just a post-war trend; it was a philosophical movement represented by some of the greatest minds in history. Obviously, existentialism is a philosophical current with technical language that must withstand the criticisms of the philosophical community and the constant defenders of other dogmas. That is why Sartre, in this simple and short manuscript, tries to provide an overview of existentialism for a general audience. This text is a classic, and if you haven’t read it, you are literally missing out on a worldview that continues to shape the world from its most hidden depths. If you want to finally understand what existentialism is, start by reading this text by Sartre, the philosopher who declined the Nobel Prize. Click here to buy this book.

“In the vast literature of love, The Seducer’s Diary is an intricate curiosity–a feverishly intellectual attempt to reconstruct an erotic failure as a pedagogic success, a wound masked as a boast,” observes John Updike in his foreword to Søren Kierkegaard’s narrative. This work, a chapter from Kierkegaard’s first major volume, Either/Or, springs from his relationship with his fiancée, Regine Olsen. Kierkegaard fell in love with the young woman, ten years his junior, proposed to her, but then broke off their engagement a year later. This event affected Kierkegaard profoundly. Olsen became a muse for him, and a flood of volumes resulted. His attempt to set right, in writing, what he feels was a mistake in his relationship with Olsen taught him the secret of “indirect communication.” The Seducer’s Diary, then, becomes Kierkegaard’s attempt to portray himself as a scoundrel and thus make their break easier for her. Think of The War of Art as tough love…for yourself.

Since 2002, The War of Art has inspired people around the world to defeat “resistance”; to recognize and knock down dream-blocking barriers and to silence the naysayers within us. Resistance kicks everyone’s butt, and the desire to defeat it is equally as universal. The War of Art identifies the enemy that every one of us must face, outlines a battle plan to conquer this internal foe, then pinpoints just how to achieve the greatest success.

Though it was written for writers, it has been embraced by business entrepreneurs, actors, dancers, painters, photographers, filmmakers, military service members, and thousands of others around the world. Click here to buy the book.

A landmark of Enlightenment thought, Hume’s An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding is accompanied here by two shorter works that shed light on it: A Letter from a Gentleman to His Friend in Edinburgh, Hume’s response to those accusing him of atheism, of advocating extreme skepticism, and of undermining the foundations of morality; and his Abstract of A Treatise of Human Nature, which anticipates discussions developed in the Enquiry.

In his concise Introduction, Eric Steinberg explores the conditions that led Hume to write the Enquiry and the work’s important relationship to Book I of Hume’s A Treatise of Human Nature. Click here to buy the book.

It’s no wonder that The Power of Now has sold over 16 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over 30 foreign languages. Much more than simple principles and platitudes, the book takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light. In the first chapter, Tolle introduces readers to enlightenment and its natural enemy, the mind. He awakens readers to their role as a creator of pain and shows them how to have a pain-free identity by living fully in the present. The journey is thrilling, and along the way, the author shows how to connect to the indestructible essence of our Being, “the eternal, ever-present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death.” Featuring a new preface by the author, this paperback shows that only after regaining awareness of Being, liberated from Mind and intensely in the Now, is there Enlightenment.
